Science Week Activities

Last week here at Oaklands we celebrated science week. We had guest speakers, science themed quizzes and competitions.

A big thank you to our past pupil Odhran Cully for taking time out of his studies to give a presentation to 5th year Chemistry & Physics students as part of Science week. Odhran is currently in his final year of Theoretical Physics in Trinity College Dublin. He spoke about his course, college life and all that it has to offer. Odhran was one of the students who represented Oaklands in the astronaut challenge at NASA in Orlando, Florida. The Science department are very proud of Odhran and all he has accomplished so far.

Our Ag-Science students got a virtual tour of the Airfield Estate in Dundrum. Also well done to Ms. Mahon’s second year Science students who designed and built a device that transforms energy from one form to another. The overall winners were Amelia Boland and Katelyn King.

We were also very lucky to be involved in the Girls in STEM project with the School of Education in UCD and Science Foundation Ireland. This project is aimed at girls and it tries to change girls’ attitudes towards STEM. Some of our second year history and LCA  students researched some of the pioneering women in STEM and created posters about those women. These students will also create digital-stories about these women also. We were also gifted with lego sets by Science Foundation Ireland and UCD, we hope to further this club throughout the year and also use Minecraft in the club.

Huge well done to all involved.
